The Summer’s Over. Now, How Do We Optimise the Pipeline?

The summer holiday season is almost behind us. Out-of-office messages are disappearing, inboxes are filling up again and, for many B2B businesses, it’s time to get heads down and focus on one thing: how do we close out the year strongly and hit our targets?

But with just a few months left on the clock, the answer probably isn’t simply to do more.  It’s about doing more of the right things. The first question should be: what have we already got?

Take a good, hard look at the pipeline. Which opportunities are genuinely progressing? Which have stalled? Which prospects have gone quiet but could still have a need? And perhaps most importantly, which opportunities are aligned with your ideal customer profile and worth investing valuable sales time in?  Because not every lead is created equal and when time is running short, prioritisation matters.

Don't forget what's already in the database

There is often a considerable amount of untapped opportunity sitting within the existing database.

Prospects who engaged earlier in the year. Leads that weren't quite ready. Opportunities that went cold because budgets weren't available at the time. Contacts who downloaded something, attended an event or had an initial conversation but didn't progress.  They shouldn't necessarily be written off.

A well-targeted nurture and re-engagement programme can help identify where there is still genuine interest and, importantly, where there is a reason to have a conversation now.

Look beyond the immediate quarter

There is, of course, a temptation at this point in the year to focus entirely on opportunities that can close before December.  And that's understandable.  But if all the effort goes into harvesting existing demand, what happens when that demand runs out?

Pipeline generation needs to be continuous. While sales teams are working hard to convert current opportunities, marketing and demand generation should be creating and developing the next wave.  That means keeping the right prospects engaged, building relationships, identifying emerging requirements and ensuring there is a healthy pipeline coming into 2027.

Quality over quantity

The final few months of the year can create a real temptation to chase volume. More calls. More emails. More leads. More activity. But activity isn't the same as progress.

The better question is: are we engaging the right people, with the right message, at the right time?  Good data, focused targeting, relevant messaging and meaningful conversations can make every marketing and sales interaction work harder.  And that's where the opportunity lies.

The post-summer period isn't just about pushing harder to hit the number. It's a chance to step back, understand what's working, optimise the activity already underway and make sure every effort is contributing to a healthier, more qualified pipeline.

Because closing out 2026 successfully is important.  But building a pipeline that provides a strong start to 2027 is the real opportunity.
